ESL Story Most people in the USA are immigrants from all around the world. Some came long ago. My Shirk ancestors were forced out of Switzerland due to religious persecution and arrived in Pennsylvania in 1728. My husband is a first generation immigrant who came to the USA from Jordan as a teenager. After our marriage, we spent many years in my husband's home country. Our family is bi-lingual. Welcome to my ESL Classroom!
You (ESL student) need to learn English well enough to have a future bright with possibilities. My job - my passion - this year as your teacher is:
to give you enough increase in language skill
and enough hope that
you will persist toward high school graduation
which is so important
whether you are looking for a college education or a job.
All of you come with a lot of knowledge
from life experiences
from other languages and cultures
from other school experiences.
We will share our stories as we connect background knowledge with the new things we learn.

There has to be some kind of content as we learn language. We have to talk, read and write about something. Most of the content of our language studies will be taken from your math, science and history classes. As you learn about things like pronunciation and sentence structure, you will also be learning the vocabulary and spelling you need for your other classes.
How will our classroom be arranged and the time structured? How are you expected to behave?
How will you be graded? Why will much of our learning be in small groups? How can you contact me?

My hypothetical students have first languages of Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Vietnamese, so a few key words on these web pages will be translated into those languages. If this was for a real class of students, I'd check the words with someone who knows the language, as Google Translator does not always come up with the best option.
The contents will be modified according to the realities and policies of the school which hires Jeanne Shirk Sahawneh to teach ESL.
